Complicity: Accepting It Is Your Fault Forever?

With the renaming and relaunching of the Little Deal Clincher blog to Navigating the Challenges of 21st Century Life: A Private Investor’s Perspective.

It shall continue to comment on investment from the private investor’s perspective and to discuss political and cultural issues. The update makes the website easier to navigate with an archive of topic headings in chronological order.

As part of the relaunch, the August 2023 post in the cultural section features the publication of my complicity dissertation for the MA in Philosophy from the Open University where I graduated in March 2023. Benefitting from a professional edit and chapter photographs hopefully readers find it an interesting read making a pertinent point regarding inherent complicity of political power and responsibility.

The main thrust of my argument against the articles referenced by the late intergenerational philosopher Jenna Thompson and analytic philosopher Margaret Gilbert, author of a Theory of Political Obligation (2006) is to suggest time limits for culpability and refute the claim that people are guilty of wrong-doing and complicity in the actions of their government even before they are born because they collectively share associated guilt by participating in democratic activities such as voting as a citizen or participating in civic duties.

There is further discussion with refence to other events, points-of-view and examples covering war atrocities from World War 2, a corporate legal case from the ongoing Syrian conflict and comment on the War in Ukraine.

In a wider context there is point made about the Problem of Appropriate Accountability of those citizens substantially removed from decision-making or effective power or influence over events either political, military, or commercial that I wish to develop further in the cultural section over the coming months.

The issue of rising interest rates which effects housing demand and the availability of mortgage funding also having a knock-on effect for insurance premiums and car financing shall also feature with the investment focussed section of the blog. In the months ahead the critical issue, more so for the Bank of England than the US Federal reserve or ECB, over interest rates peaking and the retreat or stickiness of core inflation measures.

Please enjoy the update and leave your comments below.

  1. Thanks LDC. The idea that there is some form of inherited obligation emanating from the actions of your polity is so dumb. How far back do you go? Who decides how high the reparations should be? What about the good stuff like inventing penicillin? What is a polity anyway? Germany in 2023 is very different to 1914. The whole movement is just carpet-bagging from imagination-free, historical illiterates..
